Category: Technology

Germany’s Minister of Justice, Marco Buschmann, has called for an EU-wide effort to regulate the content on Telegram.

Germany’s Federal Minister of Justice, Marco Buschmann, has called for an EU-wide effort to effectively censor Telegram users or ban the application altogether. Although he did not explicitly threaten a blanket ban, he said that compliance with his demands, in this proposal, would result in uninterrupted access to the European market. Telegram is headquartered in Dubai.

US Wins Appeal in Assange Extradition Case
Category: Technology

How shocking!

The US won their appeal against a UK court’s refusal to extradite Julian Assange, the co-founder of WikiLeaks.

A court in January blocked the US’s attempt to extradite Julian Assange, ruling that Assange would face brutal conditions in US prisons and might commit suicide.

Who is Running Hundreds of Malicious Tor Relays?
Category: Technology

A threat actor is running hundreds of malicious Tor relays as part of what researchers suspect is an attempt to deanonymize Tor users.

Nusenu, a Tor relay operator, first identified “KAX17” as a sophisticated threat actor in 2019. At the time, Nusenu had identified a “long-running suspicious relay group” that was active since 2017, if not earlier. “At their peak, they reached >10% of the Tor network’s guard capacity,” Nusenu wrote in 2019.

Tutanota is Hardly the Solution to the ProtonMail Problem
Category: Technology

Although ProtonMail is one of the few email providers that are not openly hostile to those who value their privacy, the company’s willingness to comply with law enforcement has concerned some users. To be fair, it is understandably difficult for me to criticize such a company when they do fight the majority of requests by law enforcement agencies. But when the company arbitrarily decided to comply with a request for information from law enforcement without a court order, they opened the door to unconditional criticism (most of which has been highlighted by commenters or various bloggers online).

FBI Doc Highlights the Benefits of End-to-End Encryption
Category: Technology

A document from the Federal Bureau of Investigation reveals the data the Bureau can (and can’t) access from messaging applications, including iMessage, Signal, Telegram, Wickr, WhatsApp, and others.

Property of the People obtained the document through a FOIA request in November 2021. The FBI’s Science and Technology Branch and Operational Technology Division created the document in January 2021. The document, which serves as an internal guide for Bureau employees, outlines the information available to the FBI during an investigation. The document lists iMessage, Line, Signal, Telegram, Threema, Viber, WeChat, WhatsApp, and Wickr. The document validates the information already known to people interested in private messaging services.

Sweden Demands the EU Ban Proof of Work Crypto Mining
Category: Technology

Swedish authorities are calling on the EU to ban energy-intensive cryptocurrency mining ostensibly to make the world colder.

Erik Thedéen, the Director-General at the Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority, and Björn Risinger, the Director-General at the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency have called for a ban on the proof of work mining within the EU. “The social benefit of crypto-assets is questionable,” according to the directors of these Swedish government agencies. They wrote that their agencies, alongside the International Monetary Fund and the US Federal Reserve, consider aspects of cryptocurrency “problematic.”

Brave.com Is Now Available as an Onion Service
Category: Technology

Brave, the Chromium-based browser that sells itself on privacy and adblocking features, launched a version of its website for Tor users.

In a recent blog post, a Devops Engineer at Brave announced the creation of a Brave.com onion service (brave5t5rjjg3s6k.onion). Brave is fairly straightforward about the purpose of the onion service. Unlike many high-profile companies with onion services, Brave’s recent creation appears to exist for more than just optics.
